Diarrhea & Dehydration

Being tied to a bathroom due to diarrhea is a huge inconvenience. And unfortunately, the biggest medical risk to diarrhea is dehydration.

Diarrhea

Common causes of diarrhea include viruses (like the flu), parasites, digestive problems, medications (prescribed or otherwise), and allergies. Usually once the toxin passes you’ll feel much better. However, there are some things to look for to make sure there are no lasting or residual effects from your bout with diarrhea. If you have any of the following symptoms (along with your diarrhea), consult a doctor:

  • Bloody or black stools
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Rectal pain
  • Bloating
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea lasting more than three days

Dehydration

Like vomiting, the health risk of common diarrhea is dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Thirst
  • Dry or flushed skin
  • Dark colored urine
  • Dry sticky mouth
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue

When suffering from diarrhea drink plenty of fluids (especially water or a favorite sports drink). If your diarrhea exceeds the amount of fluids you intake, or if you think you might be dehydrated as a result of diarrhea or vomiting, consult your doctor immediately.
